I'm Ben Owen & I began my cyber security career around 10-years ago when I actually arrived in the private industry having spent my whole career in the military and government services. In that period, my internet experience was very minimal. You could say my internet experience was logging on to send an email here and there, or the odd Google search for cheap holidays to somewhere hotter than the UK (not difficult)! I don’t think I even knew the difference between a browser and a search engine before I began my career into the wonderful world of cyber security and online investigations. In fact, I used to actively hide from anything technical, I didn’t like it. But, that is what our human brain does. It hides from the unknown as a defence mechanism. That is exactly why you should do the things that make you uncomfortable to push boundaries. Be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Anyway, before I digress into philosophical opinions, I’ll get myself back on track!
Since working in cyber, I have found a niche in online intelligence gathering. To put this in simple terms, I’m not necessarily what you would deem a technical cyber expert, but my work supports teams that are looking to technically penetrate a business/company/persons digital environment. I find the route in via social engineering and other digital trickery tactics. I also conduct online investigations, such as incident response investigations. This is when a hack has taken place and our company is tasked with identifying the hacker group, or person. Is it an insider at the company, or is it a group from Russia?, etc. No day is the same and I am so pleased to be in this industry. My whole life has been about gathering information on others’. We are of an era where information is key, information = success (however you quantify it) and financial gain. People pay good money for good information. I took the intelligence gathering route in the digital space, but there are so many other opportunities for those who may be more technical than me in this industry. I simply cannot recommend it enough.
So, let’s get started with my inaugural blog. I aim to provide short articles about interesting and informative topics in the world of cyber security, and more! I hope you enjoy them.
